Bushfire Community Recovery Service

CatholicCare’s Bushfire Community Recovery Service offers confidential counselling and support to families and individuals impacted by the Black Saturday bushfires - for the long haul.

On the ground counsellors provide ongoing assistance free of charge in bushfire affected communities - in their homes or places of work. Since its inception, the Bushfire Recovery Service has provided a variety of programs and services to communities affected by the Black Saturday bushfires on 7th February 2009.

With funding for our services extended to December 2013, our multidisciplinary team continues to work with communities using a psychosocial framework.

The Service provides projects and programs with support from community members which assists in the healing and recovery of the community, including counselling and outreach services, facilitiated support groups, and programs and workshops. Our community events have brought community members back together with an emphasis on meeting the community's spiritual needs and healing the community as a whole.  Other projects and services have focussed on providing informal support through recreational activities, giving much needed respite and the opportunity for light-hearted social interactions with fellow community members.

CatholicCare's Bushfire Community Recovery Service is unique to many other service providers working with those affected by the bushfires: our team will continue to work alongside the community for the long haul, walking with each individual as they continue their recovery.

Men's Getaways

The Age featured an article (12/12/2009) on Men's Getaways for men from bushfire affected communities. This series of weekend getaways were funded by CatholicCare's Bushfire Community Recovery Service and organised by the Hurstbridge Bushfire Support Centre to enable the men to relax together through activities such as fishing in East Gippsland, and talking. Some of the men from Flowerdale tell their story of what they experienced on Black Saturday and how important it has been for them to keep talking and supporting each other.
